Do dunes move? It might seem obvious to say “yes,” but just because dunes move on Earth doesn’t automatically mean we should assume they move on Mars.

HiRISE often takes multiple images of the same area to track changes, and dunes are no exception. We know that dunes, indeed, do move on Mars, primarily due to the wind. How much they move is what we can track over time. With this image, we’re looking to capture as much as possible of the dune field in the center of Kunowsky Crater in order to begin change detection measurements.

Kunowsky is about 67 kilometers in diameter and was named after Georg Karl Friedrich Kunowsky, a German astronomer (1786–1846).
